As the world continuous to change rapidly, it will be more and more important to bring human rights to the forefront of debate.Ashley Colpaarthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17344668356029565424noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3219460691119218954.post-75729810675256080772009-10-14T10:59:46.149-07:002009-10-14T10:59:46.149-07:00It is a mistake to think that human rights are not...It is a mistake to think that human rights are not codified in the US Constitution-they are-selectively, and not fully encompassing of every tenet set out in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. However, the most ambitious doctrine to emerge out the set of international covenants on human rights-and the one area fully neglected in the US with our country's dogged devotion to capitalist impulses is certainly the economic rights as they are outlined in the international covenant on economic, social and cultural rights (to which the US is a signatory, incidentally). You are correct that we jealously guard political and civil rights to the exclusion of economic and cultural rights that, embraced, would represent a profound committment to human potential and development. Understanding food security through a human rights framework is helpful because it lends reciprocal legitimacy to both HR and sustainable ag. The hard work and good fight in this country will be using the political rights we DO have to usher in the social, cultural, and economic rights that are far less guaranteed. Cheers! I wish I had gone to the conference from having read your post!Jennyfriendhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10857378344743734453noreply@blogger.com
